LCO2 - 1L Cylinder Sampling

  SPC-1L Passivated 1L Cylinder

 LCO2 Sampling + Haz-Mat Shipping Instructions

The SPC-1L is designed for performing ISBT CO2 Sampling Method 1.0. It consists of a 1 Liter, heavily Sulfinert passivated cylinder that is DOT 3A1800 rated, dip-tube installed, dual-ended & 1800 psig [12,400 kPa] burst disk equipped. Port fittings are 1/4" NPT (outlet) & 1/4” compression (M) (inlet). An ST-3 passivated high pressure flex tube is included with all SPC-1L cylinder rentals.

 Recommended Support Equipment:

- PDISK-1800 spare 1800 psig [12,400 kPa] burst disk kit, SPRA-1800 press. relief fitting, ST-3 high pressure, flexible sampling tubing, CRYGL-14 cyrogenic safety gloves, SAFE-T-SHIELD protective face shield.

WARNINGS: Before sampling, review MSDS information on CO2. Sampling must be performed in a well-ventilated area by personnel trained in handling pressurized, cryogenic gas. Safety glasses, cryogenic safety gloves & other necessary equipment must be worn. Ensure that the 5 yr hydrostatic test period has not expired. DO NOT use the cylinder if it is beyond this date. Shipment of this Hazmat sample can only be performed by Haz-Mat certified personnel.

IF PROPER SAMPLING PROCEDURES ARE NOT FOLLOWED, THESE CYLINDERS CAN BE OVERFILLED WHICH WILL RESULT IN A DANGEROUS OVER-PRESSURE CONDITION!

1.) Record all sample ID data on an ID tag & remove both cylinder end caps (lanyard attached).

2.)Connect a SPRA-1800/ST-3 assembly to the LCO2 source valve*. Using cryogenic safety gloves (CRYGL-14), hold the tubing near its free end, point the end away from you & briefly purge ( 5-10 sec) the LCO2 source valve / transfer line to remove any particulate matter.

*Note: The SPC-1L should not be connected to the ST-3 sampling line at this point.Use only Sulfinert passivated fittings.

3.) Connect the SPC-1L inlet fitting to the ST-3. Tighten then slightly loosen the SPC-1L connection to this ST-3 sampling line, so that LCO2 will leak from the 1/4” compression fitting during line purging (Step #4).

4.) Carefully open the LCO2 source valve & gently purge the sampling line of air & moisture (approx. 10 sec.). Next, re-tighten the SPC-1L/ST-3 fitting & fully open the LCO2 source valve (Keep the source valve open until Step #6).

5.) Orient the SPC-1L in a vertical position.Open the SPC-1L'sinlet valve slightly, then outlet valve slightly to start a gentle purging & filling process. TheSPC-1L will chill & wall condensation will often appear as liquid CO2 filling begins.

6.) Close the SPC-1L outlet valve* when “Sputtering Snow” appears. Next, close  the SPC-1L's inlet valve* then close the LCO2 source valve. When performed properly, cylinder filling takes about 1 min.

 * Note: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN a cylinder valve as this can cause valve damage & leakage.

7.) Carefully disconnect the SPC-1L & immediately orient it in a vertical position so that the pressure relief valve is on top (Refer to the body decal). In this position, the dip-tube points downward into the liquid CO2.

8.) Point the SPC-1L slightly away from you. Carefully open the top valve & vent off any liquid CO2 overfill as a “Sputtering Snow” stream. Continue to vent off excess liquid CO2until the snow stream visibly & audibly changes into all vapor (no “Sputtering Snow”). Next, closethe top valve* & recap the SPC-1L (use PTFE tape on NPT threads).

*Note: The liquid CO2 fill will now be below the dip-tube.In this state, an SPC-1L contains a safe amount of liquid CO2 that is less than 68% of its water wt. capacity (typically, a 450 – 600 g fill of liquid CO2 is acheived).

WARNING: Storing & Shipping an OVERFILLED CO2 cylinder is DANGEROUS & ILLEGAL!

9.) Disconnect the SPRA-1800/ST-3 sampling line from the LCO2 source & store this assembly in a zippered bag.

10.) Return the safely-filled SPC-1L to the shipping area. Dry-off any surface condensate that may have formed. Check for any audible gas leaks. DO NOT ship the sample if any leaks are detected.

*Note: Contact ALI for leakage repair or SPC-1L maintenance instructions.

11.) Securely Over pack (Using ONLY bubble-wrap cushioning) an SPC-1L in a sturdy fiberboard or rugged molded plastic box (with a seal ring) & insert a completed Analysis Request form. Follow all HAZMAToverpack labeling regulations including: Affixing the UN code (UN1013), shipping name "Carbon dioxide", Net = 0.5 kg label, “Air Eligibility” label, green "NON-FLAMMABLE GAS Class 2" label, “Inside Packages meet Prescribed Specifications” label, “To/From Address”  labels.  ALL Labels MUST be affixed on the SAME SIDE OF THE FIBERBOARD SHIPPING BOX (see picture). Complete all courier paperwork including: Class or Division = “2.2”, Packing Grp“--”, Subsid Risk “--”, Qty & Type of Packaging “1 steel cylinder x 0.5 kg, Overpack used”, Packing Inst. “200”, Authorization “—“, Net wt. of CO2 = 0.5 kg .

12.) Ship the sample to ALI using a Hazmat qualified express air or ground courier.

Proper Sampling & Shipping is the most important step in testing your CO2.
