State-of-the Art Gas Detector tubes (DT) are extemely valuable, easy to use and low cost tools for determining a wide range of impurities in many types of gases. For example, several professional societies such as ISBT,CGA. USP/NF, ASTM, EIGA, and others list DT-based methods for measuring key impurities in carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, nitrous oxide, helium, hydrogen, argon, SCBA. compressed air, ambient air, industrial air, fuel gases and refrigerants.
The optimal use of detector tubes requires a knowledge of both their capabilites and limitations. Operator training is also needed to ensure that these devices are correctly and safely used. In practice, selection of the best DT model involves; impurity identification, defining the best measurement range, ensuring the tube is not prone to likely sample interferences, using the right support equipment (e.g. sample container, connective hardware & pump), drawing the proper amount of gas, knowing how to correctly read the tube scale, and finally knowing what to do if a problem is found.
Many customers require some assistance in selecting and using detector tubes for their specific needs. Most detector tube distributors such as big scientific supply houses or “safety equipment” companies will simply sell you a detector tube -- and that’s about it. Some may offer you limited advice on traditional applications such as industrial hygiene - but for other industrial or medical applications -- you’re on your own.
ALI is uniquely different because we are experienced experts in gas analysis. In addition to stocking and distributing detector tubes from all leading manufacturers, we develop and validate DT test methods required for many industrial applications.
One of our R&D applications was the development of a special Gastec Model 121AHC for ppb benzene measurements in CO2. ALI is an exclusive world distributor of this very valuable tube. We have also develped many other simple DT methods for determining trace total sulfur, acetaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide in CO2 and other gases - down to low ppb levels. We are also active in improving the test methods used for USP/NF grade gases.
Our company has recognized that detector tubes and sensors can also be used in many “non-traditional” ways. For example, many customers can benefit from using gas manifold -based DT methods. This allows several types of impurities to be measured simultaneously, increases tube sensitivity, and eliminates the tedium of routine handpump testing. Rugged, reliable, passivated DT manifolds can be used as low-cost alternatives or back-ups to expensive electronic “gas quality” analyzers.
Other non-traditional uses of DT’s are the measurement of volatile impurities purged from non-gaseous solid or liquid samples. Our staff has experience and special equipment for performing such novel applications. We are also active in exploring the development of “smart-filter” technologies. In this concept, detector tubes and low cost chem-sensing devices are being used to monitor “filter health” and signal when it is time to “change the cartridge”. Smart Filter technology has many potential future uses.
In summary, we distribute all makes & models of gas detector tubes (Draeger, Gastec, Kitagawa, Sensidyne) + gas sensor & support equipment - worldwide - at highly discounted prices + provide technical recommendations on applications + offer ALI validated methods + develop / validate new DT methods for your specific needs + can support you with expert laboratory testing!
