Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Quality Testing

Typical Industrial Uses of Carbon Dioxide

Carbonated Soft Drinks - Beer - Food Processing / Freezing - Medical Disciplines - Electronics - Refrigeration

Airborne Labs International’s laboratory is fully certified by many major international soft drink, beer, CO2 supplier companies and distributors to test the quality of their liquid CO2 (LCO2) and to evaluate CO2 feedgas streams.

To satisfy a rapidly growing world demand for CO2, a wide range of feedgas streams including several “non-traditional” sources are being used. Commercially available LCO2 can come from ammonia synthesis, hydrogen plants, fermentation of bio-materials, natural wells, ethylene oxide production, refinery/chemical process effluent gas, acid neutralization, landfill gas, and fuel combustion including power plant stack gas. Each type of CO2 feed source has a complex and characteristic set of impurities that must be removed in order to ensure that a proper LCO2 purity level has been acheived.

Due to the unique features of commercial LCO2 distribution networks which include bulk shipping, depot transfilling, seasonal product-swapping, partial load drop-offs, tank farm storage and internal capture/re-use processes (e.g. beer production), foreign impurities can be introduced into an originally “pure” LCO2 load! The impurities that can be encountered includes not only sensory-active agents such as sulfurous gases and aldehydes, but also toxic and carcinogenic agents that can impart potential health risks in certain end uses. Because of these risks, for food and beverage applications, ALI recommends the use of our low cost gas analyzers that can rapidly screen all incoming LCO2 loads for purity.

ALI’s expert staff, laboratory resources and “No-Haz” sampling kits allows us to provide world-wide customers with certified, comprehensive information about their LCO2 or feedgas quality. We pride ourselves in our rapid turn-around of test reports --- responsive, expert customer support --- rugged, reliable gas analyzer systems & critical test supplies ---- all offered at a fair price.

Example: Beverage Industry CO2 Quality Concerns

It is recommended that all LCO2 used for beverage production meet or exceed 2001 ISBT purity guidelines. Testing LCO2 to ISBT guidelines is a challenge that requires an experienced staff and well-equipped laboratory that is certified to perform LCO2 gas analysis.

ALI can also test LCO2 or Dry Ice to a variety of CGA or USP purity grade specifications
